It’s Not Just About the Race
North America’s Largest Dragon Boat Festival Offers Something for Everyone

[Ottawa, Ontario – May 30, 2007] The 14th Annual Nortel Ottawa Dragon Boat Race Festival brings a weekend of fun and fundraising to Mooney’s Bay June 23-24, 2007 to celebrate Chinese cultural tradition and support local charities.

Dragon Boat Racing has grown to become one of the hottest sporting events in the Nation's Capital and today the Nortel Ottawa Dragon Boat Race Festival is the largest of its kind in North America. The Festival has grown to a 3-day sell-out event with 190 teams, 60,000 spectators and a $250, 000 fundraising target with proceeds benefiting the Ottawa Senators Foundation / Roger’s House, Centretown Laundry Co-op, Special Olympics Ontario Ottawa District and Junior Achievement of Eastern Ontario.

The Festival offers a multitude of entertainment choices for those not involved in the racing.  The entire family will find something to enjoy including multicultural performances with dancing, singing, circus performers and other Asian related arts.  New this year is the Tim Horton’s Kid’s Zone which will host Little Ray's Reptiles, Circus Montreal's Family Show, Magician Chris Pilsworth, free air bounce rides, artisan's tent, free face painting, and much more!  The main stage this year will be alive all day with various talented performers and will include big names such as:

  • Friday Night - The Mighty Popo, member of the 2004 Juno Award winning African Guitar Summit
  • Saturday Afternoon - Skydiggers play some of the hits from their first studio album in five years, Bittersweet Harmony
  • Jeff Healey & the Jazz Wizards will delight with some classic jazz on their newly released CD, It‘s Tight Like That

Also on site will be a large variety of concessionaires and exhibitors representing Ottawa’s cross-cultural community including Owl Rafting, Metta Massage, Regatta Sports, Mugena, Oriental Palace, Scrumptious BBQ, the Royal Oak Beer Garden and more.  New for 2007 is the Dell Team Area where computers will be on site to provide access to free wireless internet, race updates and gaming.  A Silent Auction Zone will include Via Rail tickets, gift certificates from local businesses, fitness memberships, and signed Ottawa Senators jersey among other items.  A complete list of event day activities can be found at www.dragonboat.net.

About Nortel Ottawa Dragon Boat Race Festival
The Nortel Ottawa Dragon Boat Race Festival began in 1993 as part of a larger Chinese cultural tradition that goes back 2,400 years.  With assistance from the Hong Kong Canada Business Association it started small with only 25 participating teams over a half day event.  By 2006, the sport had grown to 190 teams participating in both the corporate and community categories over two days, making the Nortel Ottawa Dragon Boat Race Festival the largest Dragon Boat Festival in North America.  In 1998, a charitable component was added to the Festival raising funds for 4 local charities on an annual basis.  To date $1,000,000 has been raised through the “Pledge Challenge” and the Ottawa Dragon Boat Foundation has since been established to help focus and grow this necessary component.
